Calm Your Nervous System: Simple Practices for Everyday Life

A lot of us move through the day with a low hum of stress in the background — shoulders up by our ears, breath shallow, mind already three steps ahead. The good news is that your nervous system can learn to settle. It mostly comes down to breath, movement, touch, and a little quiet — which, as it happens, is the heart of what we do at InnerLight.

A few things you can try today

You don't need a studio or any equipment for these. Try them anywhere — at your desk, in the car, or before bed.

  • Lengthen your exhale. Breathe in for a count of four, then out for six or more. A longer exhale gently tells your body it's safe to relax.

  • Do a quick body scan. Starting at your feet and moving up to your head, notice where you're holding tension — and see if you can soften it, one spot at a time.

  • Move gently. Slow neck rolls, shoulder circles, or a forward fold help release stuck stress. This kind of easy, mindful movement is the heart of qigong.

  • Come back to your senses. Plant your feet on the ground and name five things you can see and three you can hear. It brings you right back to the present moment.

Going a little deeper

When you're ready to take it further, that's where we come in. A massage with Jamie helps your body let go of what it's been holding. Our qigong, yoga, and meditation classes give your nervous system regular practice at downshifting. It's the same breath-and-body approach AnnMarie shared with the team at Central Hudson — simple tools that work whether you're at a desk or on a mat.

Start small. One slow exhale, right now, is enough. And when you'd like to go deeper, text us at 845-229-9998 to book a session or join a class for $18. Come back to yourself.
